British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
