Delhi Rises to Toxic Smog Post Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" range.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Various sections of the capital showed an AQI over 500, which equals 10x the recommended level recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable limits.

Fireworks Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the capital as colder weather begins.

However recently, the recently formed regional government petitioned the judicial authority to request a modification of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and environment".

Legal Verdict and Reality

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, the court complied with the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the designated hours across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the capital registered air quality spiking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Regional Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Near celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the most severe records ever measured in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest city.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The problem in Delhi is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, farmers illegally burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air descends.

Public Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to numerous research.

This pollution causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 early deaths per year in Delhi.
