Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their release of a controversial video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The clip, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in defense or defense positions.
"As we did, you all made an pledge to defend and uphold this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out directives that violate the law or our national charter."
The Former President's Furious Response
The recorded statement appeared to provoke a heated response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a unified declaration denouncing the remarks.
"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our country with great loyalty and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these unhinged digital publications and retract his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Officials' Firm Answer
The representatives who participated in the video also published a declaration.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who care for this United States and swore an pledge to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that important duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Our service members should recognize that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and duty to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and censure the former president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."
More Governmental Responses
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have important representatives of the government telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The GOP official also reportedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the language and establish all that."
Administration Response
During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative declared. "We see active officials of the federal government who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel encouraging them to disobey the executive's proper directives."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in casualties, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
