Ex British Soldier Accused of Killing Kenyan Woman Appears in Courtroom

An individual has shown up before a judge as extradition hearings started in the legal matter of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a female from Kenya who was murdered near a British forces camp in the year 2012.

Purkiss, 38 years old, who is hailing from Greater Manchester region, was presented at Westminster magistrates court on Friday, and stated to the court he intended to contest the deportation. Reports indicate that he was detained on the evening of Thursday.

An arrest warrant for the suspect was authorized by a court in Nairobi in September. The prosecution told the Kenyan court that the individual had been accused of a single count, of killing, and that the Kenyan authorities would pursue his extradition to answer to accusations.

Purkiss was once employed as a army medic with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the army unit for the north-west of England, including on tours of Afghanistan.

Wanjiru, twenty-one, a hairdresser who had a young daughter, disappeared after a night out, and her remains was found two months later in the area of the lodging where she had previously spotted.

No one had earlier been detained or indicted in connection to her demise. Purkiss’s arrest was the result of a fresh police investigation, which was initiated after a article in 2021 by the Sunday Times, in which the publication contacted several current and former soldiers in the military group.

The investigation has been led by detectives in Kenya, which, under a mutual defense pact, maintains prosecutorial power in the matter.
