Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor stated when asked about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

The governor's time in office as California's leader concludes in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he noted that any choice is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

Newsom has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and advocating for a proposition that would increase Democratic congressional seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from critics.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a weekend segment on Fox News. The secretary revealed a strategy to pull federal funds from the state and threatened revoking the state's ability to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," Duffy said, after a recent deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that caused three deaths and casualties.

The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization on several occasions, which enabled him to obtain a CDL under national regulations.

Duffy had before indicated he was holding back $40 million from California for ignoring English language requirements for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand national statutes," Newsom's office responded in a recent comment responding to the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A recent study showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters believed that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has risen to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, Newsom remarked while traveling several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.

He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, extraordinary," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
