A small boy has died during a family ski holiday in Japan after he became entangled in a resort travelator.

On Sunday morning, the child, identified as Hinata Goto, was nearing the end of the travelator at a northern resort when he stumbled. His right arm became trapped in the machinery.
This equipment was equipped with a automatic stop feature, but it did not trigger. It only ceased operation when the boy's mother activated the emergency stop button.
First responders required 40 minutes taking apart part of the machine to rescue the boy, who by then had become unresponsive. He was subsequently declared deceased at the hospital.

Staff at the resort stated that the travelator's automatic stop system, designed to stop operations if it sensed a trapped object, had been tested that same morning.
Investigators are conducting a probe to assess whether there was any fault, such as in the manufacturing and upkeep of the equipment.
