Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
