Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the images originated relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
