Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
