Meteorologists are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," said the weather service.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Readings are due to be cold, making warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Alerts Released

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this indicated the weather was likely to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
