The Mayor-Elect states his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, did not confirm he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.
"This decision was based on the security of my family and the need to directing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will always live within me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
During his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
