The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
