The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage creates club history in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
