This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
